Elm casebearer moth

The elm casebearer moth (Coleophora ulmifoliella) is a small moth belonging to the family Coleophoridae. This species is recognized as a specialist pest that feeds exclusively on trees of the genus Ulmus, making it a significant concern for silviculture and urban forestry.

The larvae cause the primary damage to the host plant. They construct distinctive protective cases out of plant tissue and silk, which they carry around as they feed. This behavior allows them to consume the internal tissues of the leaves while remaining concealed from potential predators.

The life cycle of this moth is synchronized with the phenology of the elm tree. After overwintering as larvae in protective cases on the bark, they emerge in the spring to feed on the developing buds and young leaves. The larval stage is the most destructive phase of the insect's development.

The damage is characterized by the formation of small, window-like spots on the foliage where the green tissue has been consumed, leaving only the transparent epidermal layer. Heavy infestations can lead to significant leaf skeletonization, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree and impacts its overall health.
