Colgaroides is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Flatidae. Often referred to as planthoppers, these insects are recognized for their flattened body shape and specialized feeding habits. As pests, they pose a significant threat to various agricultural crops and ornamental plants worldwide, necessitating proactive management.
This pest primarily infests a wide range of hosts, including grapevines, citrus trees, and various shrubs. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap. This persistent feeding activity causes nutrient depletion, which is particularly detrimental to young, rapidly growing shoots and leaves.
The biology and lifecycle of Colgaroides are adapted to warm and temperate environments. Eggs are typically laid within plant tissues or bark, providing protection through the winter months. Upon hatching, the nymphs go through several molting stages, protected by a characteristic waxy secretion. This white, fluffy coating helps them evade predators and environmental stressors while they feed.

A critical aspect of their damage is the secretion of honeydew, which attracts secondary infections, such as sooty mold. This involves cultural practices such as pruning infected branches to reduce population densities and ensuring proper spacing to improve airflow.
