Description

The genus Flata belongs to the family Flatidae, known as flatid planthoppers, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by their wedge-shaped appearance and wings that are held vertically over their bodies in a tent-like fashion. They are highly adept at blending into the bark and foliage of their host plants.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant hosts. Commonly affected species include grapevines, citrus trees, fruit trees, and numerous ornamental plants. They tend to cluster on young, succulent stems and leaves, where they extract sap effectively, often causing significant stress to the plants they colonize.

Nymphs are particularly distinctive due to their secretion of white, cotton-like waxy filaments that serve as camouflage and protection against predators. The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to their feeding habits. By sucking sap from the phloem, they cause leaves to curl, yellow, and wilt. Furthermore, they excrete a sticky substance known as honeydew. This byproduct often leads to the growth of sooty mold, which can inhibit photosynthesis and significantly reduce the aesthetic and commercial value of the crop.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as pruning heavily infested branches and maintaining clean orchards, are essential. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the nymphal stages using appropriate insecticides. Monitoring the crop regularly for signs of honeydew or white waxy secretions is crucial for early detection and mitigation.
