Description

Systematic position: The hyacinth nematode (Dworena hyacintha) is a member of the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. It is a microscopic plant-parasitic roundworm that specializes in invading the bulbous structures of specific ornamental plants.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the hyacinth (Hyacinthus). Due to its specialized nature, the nematode causes severe economic losses in floriculture, as it can persist in infected bulbs and spread rapidly through agricultural and landscape distribution channels.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle occurs primarily within the host's tissue. The nematodes penetrate the bulb scales and basal plate, moving intercellularly. They feed on plant cells, disrupting growth. Under adverse conditions, these nematodes can enter a state of dormancy, allowing them to survive for long periods in dry, dormant bulbs until they are planted in moist soil.

Symptoms and damage: The presence of this pest is revealed by darkened, decaying rings observed upon cutting the bulb. Infested plants exhibit stunted growth, twisted and yellowing leaves, and often fail to produce a flower stalk. The damage leads to bulb rotting, rendering the plant non-viable and posing a major threat to the entire flower crop.

  • Strict quarantine and visual inspection of bulbs before purchasing and planting.
  • Hot water treatment of bulbs at 43–45°C for 1–2 hours as a disinfestation measure.
  • Systematic removal and destruction of symptomatic plants and infested soil.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
  • Sourcing certified pathogen-free bulbs propagated through tissue culture laboratories.
