Comatermes
Comatermes
Description
Comatermes is a genus of termites belonging to the family Kalotermitidae, commonly known as drywood termites. These insects are specialized pests whose life cycle is intrinsically linked to the consumption and destruction of cellulose fibers. Unlike many subterranean termite species, they do not require contact with soil moisture, which makes them highly destructive to dry wooden structures and timber.
The biology of these pests is unique due to the absence of a distinct worker caste found in other termite groups. Instead, the roles of workers are performed by immature stages known as pseudergates, which can remain in an immature state for extended periods. The life cycle progresses through egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages. Colonies live entirely within the wood, which serves as both their habitat and primary food source.
These termites primarily infest seasoned, dry wood of various tree species. In agricultural and structural contexts, Comatermes poses a significant threat to wooden supports, structures, and large, weakened trees. They typically enter the wood through cracks or bark injuries, where they proceed to tunnel extensively through the heartwood and sapwood layers.
The damage caused is characterized by intricate galleries excavated within the wood, often leaving the surface intact until the structure is heavily compromised. A clear sign of infestation is the presence of distinctive fecal pellets, which appear as small, six-sided granules. These are often pushed out of the galleries through tiny holes, accumulating in piles below the infested site.
Control measures require strict phytosanitary measures during the transport of timber and the application of residual insecticides to wood surfaces. In cases of established colonies, professional fumigation is often necessary to eliminate the infestation. Targeted injection of insecticides into the gallery system is also effective for smaller, localized outbreaks to prevent the spread of the colony.
