Plataspid stink bug
Coptosoma scutellata
Description
Systematic position: The insect Coptosoma scutellata belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Plataspidae. These insects are known for their compact, globular shape, which distinguishes them from many other common shield bugs found in agricultural fields.
Crops damaged: This species is a primary pest of various legume crops. It frequently causes significant economic damage to soybean, bean, alfalfa, and vetch plantations by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap from both vegetative and reproductive parts.
Biology and life cycle: Adult bugs overwinter in leaf litter, debris, or upper soil layers. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to host plants to begin feeding. Females deposit eggs in organized rows on the underside of leaves. The nymphs undergo several molting stages, feeding on plant sap throughout their development before reaching adulthood.
Damage and economic impact: Feeding by Coptosoma scutellata leads to chlorosis, stunting, and deformation of leaves. When infestations are heavy, the bugs can cause flower and pod abortion, which significantly reduces total seed yield and lowers the overall nutritional value of the harvested legume crop.
Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach.
- Removal of weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
- Implementation of appropriate crop rotation.
- Monitoring of field populations using sticky traps.
- Application of authorized insecticides when population levels exceed the economic threshold.
