Australian termite

Coptotermes australis

Description

The Australian termite (Coptotermes australis) is a member of the order Blattodea and the family Rhinotermitidae. These highly social insects are known for their ability to form large, subterranean nests and their tendency to consume cellulose-based materials, including the living tissues of various trees and crops.

The biology of Coptotermes australis involves a caste-based system where individuals perform specific roles: workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The lifecycle begins with nuptial flights, followed by the establishment of a new colony in moist soil or decaying wood. As the colony grows, workers establish complex foraging tunnels that can extend significant distances from the main nest.

This species is considered a major agricultural pest in its range. It primarily attacks the root systems and trunks of trees, as well as crops like sugarcane. By feeding on the internal layers of plants, they disrupt nutrient and water transport, which eventually causes the plant to wither, lose structural integrity, and die.

The damage caused by these termites is often hidden until it becomes severe. Characteristic signs include earthen tubes constructed on tree bark, weakened stems that are hollow inside, and localized yellowing or sudden death of plants. Because of their secretive habits, they can remain undetected until the plant is structurally compromised.

  • Implementation of chemical soil barriers around vulnerable areas.
  • Routine removal of stumps and debris to reduce attraction.
  • Use of baiting systems containing slow-acting chitin synthesis inhibitors.
  • Regular inspection of landscape trees and crop fields.

Effective management requires targeting the entire colony rather than individual workers. Baits are generally the most successful method, as foraging termites carry the active ingredient back to the nest, facilitating the elimination of the queen and the collapse of the entire population, thus protecting crops from further infestation.
