Asian subterranean termite

Coptotermes gestroi is a species of termite in the family Rhinotermitidae, order Blattodea. Renowned for its extreme destructiveness, this species is highly invasive. It operates in massive colonies that can tunnel through various substrates, often traveling long distances underground to reach food sources, which include both structural timber and living plant tissues.

This pest is a significant threat to various agricultural crops, particularly tropical tree species. It frequently attacks rubber trees, coconut palms, fruit trees, and various plantation crops. By entering through the root system, the termites work their way up into the heartwood, weakening the plant structurally and disrupting the vascular system without showing clear signs of infestation until the tree collapses.

The biology of Coptotermes gestroi is characterized by high reproductive rates and moisture-dependent nest building. A single colony consists of specialized castes: workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The queen is the primary driver of growth, potentially laying thousands of eggs daily. Nuptial flights during the wet season allow the species to establish new colonies across vast geographical areas.

Damage caused by this termite is insidious. Because they avoid light and remain within mud tunnels or the inner layers of plant tissue, infestations often remain undetected until significant loss has occurred. The economic damage includes total tree mortality, yield reduction, and increased susceptibility of the plants to secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria due to the compromised integrity of the plant tissues.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Installation of bait stations containing chitin synthesis inhibitors that effectively eliminate the entire colony.
• Soil treatment using non-repellent termiticides to create a continuous chemical barrier.
• Frequent site inspections to detect early signs like mud tubes on stems or trunk hollows.
• Removal of stump debris and dead wood in orchards to eliminate potential nesting sites and food sources.
