Description
Coptotermes frenchi is a significant wood-destroying termite species belonging to the family Rhinotermitidae within the order Blattodea. This species is native to Australia and is recognized as a major economic pest due to its ability to colonize and destroy both living trees and structural timber.
The primary hosts for this termite include various eucalyptus species. The insects enter trees through roots or external bark wounds, gradually hollowing out the heartwood. While the external appearance of the tree may remain healthy for a long time, the internal damage severely compromises the structural integrity of the timber.
The biology of the species revolves around highly organized colonies consisting of specialized castes: workers, soldiers, and reproductives. They build intricate networks of tunnels that maintain specific humidity levels, which are essential for their survival. The colony size is typically large, allowing them to forage over significant distances from their main nest.
The damage caused by Coptotermes frenchi is notoriously difficult to detect because they avoid light and remain inside the wood or protected mud galleries. When they target structural timber, the result is often the internal collapse of supporting elements, leading to high maintenance costs and potential safety hazards in buildings.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. This involves the use of specialized baiting systems containing chitin synthesis inhibitors that are carried back to the nest. Additionally, soil treatment with termiticides creates a protective perimeter, and periodic inspections of vulnerable wooden structures remain the standard for mitigation.
