Haviland's subterranean termite

Coptotermes havilandi

Description

Systematic position. The Haviland's subterranean termite (Coptotermes havilandi) belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Rhinotermitidae. It is recognized globally as a highly destructive invasive species capable of causing significant economic losses in both agricultural and urban environments.

Crops and objects affected. This pest primarily targets cellulose-containing materials. While it causes extensive damage to wood structures, furniture, and utility poles, it also affects living trees, including fruit orchards and plantation crops. By attacking root systems and the heartwood of trees, these termites can lead to the death of mature specimens.

Biology and life cycle. Coptotermes havilandi operates in highly organized colonies featuring a queen, king, workers, soldiers, and winged reproductives known as alates. Their life cycle is characterized by rapid colony growth and the ability to maintain multiple satellite nests, allowing the population to spread efficiently across large areas.

Nature of damage. Termites feed on wood from the inside out, often leaving the surface layer intact. This makes early detection difficult until structural failure occurs. They are known for building foraging tunnels made of soil and fecal matter, which serve as protective tubes against desiccation and natural predators when moving over hard surfaces.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Recommended strategies include:

  • Deployment of baiting systems containing chitin synthesis inhibitors that lead to colony elimination.
  • Application of non-repellent liquid termiticides as a soil barrier around building foundations.
  • Regular structural inspections and moisture control to reduce environmental suitability for colony establishment.
  • Use of treated lumber or naturally resistant wood species in construction.
