Narrow-headed flathead borer

Coraebus fasciatus is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae, commonly known as jewel beetles or metallic wood-boring beetles. As an agricultural pest, it poses a significant threat to deciduous fruit orchards by causing physical damage to the vascular system of trees through its wood-boring activities.

The pest primarily targets stone fruits and pome fruits, including apricots, plums, peaches, and apple trees. While the adult beetles feed on foliage and young shoots, the primary damage is caused by the larvae. These larvae burrow deep into the bark and cambium layers, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to tree decline.

The life cycle of this insect typically spans one to two years, depending on the environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge during the spring and summer months to mate and lay eggs within bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the tissue of the host plant, where they feed and develop throughout their immature stages.

Signs of infestation include the wilting of branches, premature leaf drop, and the presence of small, characteristic exit holes in the bark. Heavily infested trees may exhibit signs of severe stress, including stunted growth, dieback, and eventually structural failure. In high-density plantations, this pest can cause significant economic losses by reducing fruit yield and shortening the tree's lifespan.

Control strategies for this pest are multifaceted. The most effective approach involves rigorous sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of infested branches to interrupt the life cycle. In severe cases, chemical interventions using systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence phase are necessary to reduce population levels and protect the orchard.
