Description
The pear buprestid (Coraebus sinuatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. This is a destructive pest primarily found in warmer regions, where favorable climate conditions support the reproduction and spread of this thermophilic insect species.
The main hosts of this pest are fruit trees from the Rosaceae family. While it primarily attacks pear trees, it is also frequently observed on apple, hawthorn, quince, blackthorn, and various stone fruit crops, significantly weakening their physiological health and overall vigor.
The biological life cycle of the species lasts one to two years depending on regional climate conditions. Adult beetles are active during the summer, feeding on foliage, while the larvae live hidden lives, creating winding tunnels beneath the bark or in the sapwood, which disrupts the tree's vascular system.
A characteristic sign of infestation is bark necrosis, dieback of individual branches, and general decline of the tree canopy. Severely infested trees lose productivity and winter hardiness, and in cases of heavy infestation, young saplings may die completely due to larval girdling of the trunk.
Control measures involve an integrated approach: regular sanitary pruning and destruction of infested branches, and timely cleaning of damaged bark areas. During the period of mass beetle emergence, contact-stomach insecticide applications are effective, alongside maintaining high-level agronomic practices to boost the orchard's resilience.
