Description

The cork oak buprestid (Coraebus undatus) is a beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae (jewel beetles). This species is a significant pest primarily affecting the cork oak (Quercus suber) and other oak species in the Mediterranean basin, where it causes substantial economic damage to the forestry industry.

The life cycle of this beetle typically spans one to two years. Adults emerge during the spring and summer months. After mating, females lay eggs in the bark crevices of host trees. The larvae then tunnel into the phloem and cambium layers, where they feed throughout their development stage.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By constructing galleries within the conductive tissues of the tree, the larvae disrupt nutrient transport. This leads to the weakening of the tree, the death of branches, and, in cases of heavy infestation, the total decline of the host tree.

In addition to physiological damage, the cork oak buprestid ruins the quality of the cork. As the larvae move through the bark, they create galleries that make the cork layer porous and unsuitable for commercial harvest. This reduces the economic output of cork-producing forests significantly.

Control strategies for this pest require an integrated approach. The most effective method is sanitation, involving the timely removal of infested wood to lower the pest population. Additionally, monitoring with pheromone traps helps to track population density, while systemic insecticides may be applied in severe outbreaks to protect vulnerable stands.
