Description

Taxonomic classification and features. The genus Cornitermes belongs to the order Isoptera (termites) and the family Termitidae. These social insects are native to the Neotropical realm, particularly common in South America. They are well-regarded in entomology for their sophisticated nest-building abilities, constructing large and hardened termite mounds that serve as highly protected centers for their complex colonies.

Susceptible crops. This pest poses a significant challenge to various agricultural industries in tropical regions. Key crops affected by Cornitermes include eucalyptus plantations, sugar cane fields, grazing pastures, and numerous fruit-bearing trees. By targeting the subterranean parts of plants, they often remain undetected until the host plant begins to show irreversible signs of stress or wilting.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Cornitermes is driven by a strict caste system including workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. A single queen and king establish the colony, with worker termites performing the bulk of the damage while foraging for cellulose-rich materials. The population growth is rapid, allowing the colony to establish a permanent presence that persists for several years if not managed.

Damage patterns and economic impact. The primary damage occurs when worker termites tunnel through roots and the base of plant stems. This structural damage inhibits the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients, leading to stunted growth or total plant mortality. Furthermore, the tunnels created by these termites facilitate the entry of pathogens, making the crop susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Protection and control measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on long-term colony suppression. Recommended measures include:

  • Applying soil-incorporated insecticides to target foraging termites.
  • Mechanical excavation and destruction of termite mounds to collapse colony structure.
  • Utilizing biological control agents, such as specialized fungi or nematodes.
  • Regular field monitoring using bait stations to detect colony expansion early.
