Description

The genus Corythucha, commonly referred to as lace bugs, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are distinguished by their ornate, lacy-looking wings, which provide excellent camouflage against the foliage they inhabit.

Lace bugs are known to infest a diverse range of host plants. Their primary targets include deciduous trees such as oak, birch, and sycamore, as well as several ornamental shrubs like azaleas, rhododendrons, and various fruit trees found in residential landscapes.

The life cycle of Corythucha progresses through eggs, nymphs, and adults. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within bark crevices or sheltered leaf litter. Females deposit clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves, where the nymphs hatch and begin feeding immediately.

The primary symptom of infestation is stippling on the upper surface of the leaves, which appears as a mosaic of pale yellow or white dots. As the feeding continues, these spots coalesce, causing leaves to lose their green color, turn brown, and eventually drop prematurely.

  • Sanitation: clearing and disposing of leaf debris in autumn.
  • Physical removal: spraying high-pressure water to dislodge colonies.
  • Chemical control: applying systemic insecticides in early infestation stages.
  • Natural enemies: preserving populations of predatory bugs and lacewings.

Effective management requires vigilance throughout the growing season. Since lace bugs primarily congregate on the undersides of leaves, monitoring these areas is critical for early detection, allowing gardeners to intervene before large-scale damage occurs.
