Description

The cherry lace bug (Corythucha associata) is a species of true bug belonging to the family Tingidae. These insects are easily recognized by the intricate, net-like appearance of their wings and pronotum, which gives them the common name "lace bug." They are specialized pests that primarily target specific host plants within the rose family, especially cherry and related species.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily restricted to the foliage of cherry and wild cherry trees. By feeding on the cellular contents of the leaves, these bugs compromise the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently. While a minor infestation may not be lethal, large populations can severely stress the tree, leading to weakened growth and susceptibility to environmental factors.

The biology of the cherry lace bug follows a hemimetabolous cycle. Adults overwinter in protected areas, such as bark crevices or underneath debris near the base of the tree. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to mate and deposit eggs on the undersides of new leaves. The nymphs remain clustered together during their early development, feeding in proximity to where they hatched.

Visual symptoms of an infestation include chlorotic spotting on the upper leaf surface, giving the foliage a stippled or gray appearance. On the underside of the leaves, one can find the insects themselves, their shed skins (exuviae), and characteristic dark, sticky frass spots. Severe feeding leads to leaf curling, premature yellowing, and early defoliation, which negatively impacts fruit size and quality.

  • Regular inspections of the foliage, particularly the undersides, starting in late spring.
  • Application of systemic insecticides or contact sprays targeting active nymph colonies.

Effective management requires early intervention. Because the nymphs feed gregariously, targeting them before they disperse across the canopy is critical for success. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the use of soaps or oils for early-stage control, help minimize the need for harsh chemicals while successfully keeping the population of Corythucha associata under threshold levels.
