Hawthorn lace bug

Systematic position: The hawthorn lace bug (Corythucha crataegi) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are easily distinguished by their delicate, lace-like appearance caused by the network of veins and raised structures on their pronotum and wings, which serve as camouflage against plant surfaces.

Host plants and damage: These pests primarily attack plants in the Rosaceae family, including hawthorn (Crataegus), apple, pear, and cotoneaster. They feed by piercing the undersides of leaves and sucking out cell contents. This feeding pattern causes stippling, chlorosis, and in severe cases, leaves turn yellow or brown and drop prematurely, severely stressing the infested trees.

Biology and life cycle: Adult lace bugs overwinter in protected areas, such as beneath loose tree bark, in leaf litter, or in crevices. In the spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of new leaves. The lifecycle includes several nymphal stages, and in favorable conditions, multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, leading to rapid population buildup by mid-summer.

Protection measures: Effective management involves a mix of sanitation and chemical interventions. Removing and destroying infested leaf litter during autumn helps reduce overwintering sites. During the growing season, if populations reach economic thresholds, application of systemic or contact insecticides is recommended. Thorough coverage, especially targeting the undersides of the foliage where nymphs reside, is crucial for success.

Economic importance: While often considered a minor pest in large orchards, the hawthorn lace bug can become a major issue in nurseries and urban landscapes. Heavy infestations diminish the aesthetic value of ornamental plants and reduce the overall vigor of young trees, making them more susceptible to drought and other environmental stresses. Regular monitoring and proactive treatment remain the best defense strategies.
