Cotton lace bug

Corythucha gossypii

Description

Taxonomic classification. The Cotton lace bug (Corythucha gossypii) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are well-known for their unique, intricate, lace-like appearance caused by the reticulated structure of their wings and pronotum. They are considered significant pests in various agricultural and horticultural sectors across tropical and subtropical regions.

Host range. This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of plants. Primary host crops include cotton, cacao, castor bean, and various fruit trees. It is also commonly found on numerous ornamental shrubs and native plants, which allows it to maintain populations even when commercial crops are not in the primary growing stage.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Corythucha gossypii consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Nymphs go through five distinct developmental stages, all of which feed on plant sap. The speed of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the year in warmer climates.

Damage symptoms and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by both adults and nymphs piercing the leaf surface and sucking out cell contents. This results in stippling, chlorosis, and eventual necrosis of the foliage. Heavy infestations cause premature leaf drop, stunted plant growth, and a significant decrease in photosynthetic efficiency, which directly translates into reduced yields and poor quality of harvested products.

Control measures. Managing this pest requires an integrated approach to maintain crop health. Effective strategies include:

  • Regular scouting of the underside of leaves for early signs of infestation.
  • Application of registered systemic or contact insecticides when threshold levels are exceeded.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop debris and infested plant parts.
  • Promotion of biological control agents such as predatory bugs, lacewings, and spiders.
  • Maintenance of balanced soil fertility to ensure plants can withstand pest pressure.
