Pale lace bug
Corythucha pallida
Description
The pale lace bug (Corythucha pallida) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are easily recognized by the intricate, net-like, or "lacey" appearance of their wings and pronotum. They are specialized sap-suckers that prefer the underside of leaves, making them difficult to detect until significant damage has already occurred.
Host plants of the pale lace bug are typically found among the Betulaceae family, with linden (Tilia) and birch (Betula) being the primary targets. While they are often considered pests of ornamental trees, severe infestations can significantly impact the physiological health of trees in urban environments, parks, and nurseries by reducing the leaf surface area available for photosynthesis.
The life cycle of Corythucha pallida involves incomplete metamorphosis consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or under bark crevices. Upon the arrival of spring, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Several generations may occur throughout the growing season, with populations peaking during the warm summer months.
Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the sap of the host plant. This feeding disrupts the leaf cells, resulting in a stippled or chlorotic appearance on the upper leaf surface. The key signs of infestation include:
- White or yellow chlorotic spots on leaves.
- Visible dark excrement spots on the underside of leaves.
- Early leaf yellowing and leaf drop.
- Reduced aesthetic value of ornamental plants.
Control of the pale lace bug requires an integrated pest management approach. This includes the use of systemic insecticides, which are particularly effective as they are ingested by the bugs during sap consumption. Additionally, sanitation practices such as the removal and destruction of infested leaf litter in the fall significantly reduce the overwintering population. Regular monitoring of susceptible host trees is essential for early intervention.
