Birch lace bug

Systematic position of Corythucha pallipes places it within the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. These insects are commonly referred to as lace bugs due to the intricate, reticulated, lace-like appearance of their wings and pronotum. They are recognized pests that specialize in feeding on the foliage of various broad-leaved trees, primarily in temperate zones.

Host plants mainly include birch trees (Betula), though this pest is also frequently encountered on linden (Tilia), elm (Ulmus), and other deciduous hardwoods. They prefer trees growing in open areas or ornamental landscapes where environmental conditions allow for rapid population buildup during warm summer months.

Biology and lifecycle revolve around overwintering as adults, usually hidden in leaf litter or deep bark fissures. As spring temperatures rise, they emerge to feed and lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The nymphs pass through several instars while remaining stationary on the leaves, sucking sap and eventually molting into adults, completing one or more generations annually depending on regional climate conditions.

Nature of damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the underside of foliage. This feeding disrupts the photosynthetic process, resulting in characteristic stippling, chlorosis, and bronzing of the leaves. Heavy infestations often lead to premature leaf drop and can significantly diminish the aesthetic value and overall vigor of the affected trees over several growing seasons.

Control measures require a multi-faceted approach to reduce pest pressure. Management strategies include the removal of leaf litter in the fall to destroy overwintering sites, as well as the application of insecticides during the peak activity of nymphs in late spring. Using horticultural oils or systemic insecticides applied to the foliage or soil can effectively manage the population while minimizing the impact on beneficial insects if applied correctly.
