Description
The grass moth, belonging to the genus Crambus and the family Crambidae, is a widespread pest that affects lawns, pastures, and cereal crops globally. These lepidopterans are commonly referred to as sod webworms in their larval stage, as they build silk-lined tunnels in the thatch layer of the soil to protect themselves while feeding.
The host range of Crambus includes various grasses, corn, wheat, oats, and other cereals. They are particularly attracted to dense vegetation, where the microclimate provides sufficient humidity for larval development. In agricultural settings, they can cause significant economic losses by reducing plant stand density.
The life cycle typically consists of several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The overwintering usually occurs at the larval stage within the soil or the root zone. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae resume feeding, grow rapidly, and eventually pupate in earthen cocoons. Adults emerge in early summer to mate and lay eggs.
The damage caused by these larvae is characterized by the consumption of blades, crowns, and roots. Initially, plants may show signs of yellowing and stunted growth. As the infestation progresses, small circular patches of dead grass appear, which can enlarge rapidly. If left unchecked, the larvae can decimate large areas of productive land.
