Crambus dissectus is a species of snout moth belonging to the family Crambidae (order Lepidoptera). These moths, often referred to as grass moths, are known for their characteristic behavior of resting with wings tightly folded around their bodies, making them resemble a dried piece of grass.

The larvae primarily feed on various species of Poaceae, including economically important cereal crops like wheat, barley, and various forage grasses. They are particularly destructive in newly established meadows and grain fields where they dwell in the thatch layer or just beneath the soil surface near the crown of the plant.

The life cycle typically spans several stages, with the larvae overwintering in the soil as they reach maturity. Development is highly sensitive to soil moisture and temperature; rapid growth usually occurs during spring when young seedlings provide an abundant, high-quality food source for the developing larvae.

Damage caused by this pest is often subtle at first, manifesting as wilting and browning of the central leaf whorl. As larvae feed on the roots and the base of the stems, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, often leading to total plant failure and localized patches of stunted growth in the crop field.

Effective management strategies include cultural practices such as late autumn tillage, which disrupts the larvae's overwintering sites, and appropriate crop rotation to break the pest cycle.
