Description

Acrobat ants (genus Crematogaster) are members of the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. They are easily recognized by their heart-shaped abdomen, which they frequently raise over their thorax when disturbed. These ants are highly adaptable and often establish nests in trees, decaying wood, or structural voids.

In agriculture, they are considered significant pests due to their strong mutualistic relationship with honeydew-producing insects like aphids, scales, and mealybugs. By protecting these pests from predators, acrobat ants indirectly cause severe damage to various fruit trees and ornamental plants, significantly reducing overall plant health.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Their colonies are often polygynous, meaning they have multiple queens, which facilitates rapid population growth and makes them difficult to eliminate with localized treatments. They often exploit existing cavities in wood, further damaging the host plant.

The damage caused is twofold: the primary impact is the unchecked proliferation of sucking pests, leading to stunted growth, leaf distortion, and potential spread of plant viruses. In cases of extreme infestation, they may strip the bark of young shoots or consume plant exudates directly, weakening the tree structure.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling acrobat ants. Strategies include the use of sticky barriers on tree trunks to prevent access, the application of targeted insecticides to control aphid populations, and regular pruning of deadwood. Eliminating alternative food sources and nesting sites is crucial for long-term population reduction.
