Description
The acrobat ant belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. It is scientifically recognized as Crematogaster scutellaris. The species is easily identified by its reddish-brown thorax and a heart-shaped gaster, which it holds raised in a defensive posture.
These insects pose a threat to a variety of agricultural crops, particularly citrus trees, vineyards, olive groves, and various nut trees. They prefer nesting in dry, rotting wood or existing cavities, which can significantly damage the structural integrity of orchard branches.
In terms of biology and life cycle, the colony often features a polygynous structure, meaning multiple queens exist within a single nest. This reproductive strategy ensures rapid expansion and colony resilience. The development follows a complete metamorphosis through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.
The primary harm caused by these ants is indirect. They are mutualists with aphids and mealybugs, actively protecting these sap-sucking pests from natural predators. This behavior leads to massive outbreaks of aphids, which deplete plant nutrients and promote the growth of sooty mold.
Effective management strategies include both physical and chemical measures to limit their impact on crop yields. Key methods include:
- implementing orchard sanitation by removing infested or hollow branches;
- applying sticky barriers on trunks to prevent ants from reaching the canopy;
- using systemic insecticide baits that the foragers carry back to the colony;
- controlling the aphid populations to remove the primary food source that attracts the ants.
