Aroid whitefly

Crenidorsum aroidephagus

Description

Crenidorsum aroidephagus is a specialized insect pest belonging to the whitefly family (Aleyrodidae) within the order Hemiptera. As its scientific name implies, this species has a high affinity for plants within the Araceae family. It is considered a significant threat to indoor plant collections, botanical gardens, and commercial nurseries where warm and humid conditions provide ideal habitats for its proliferation.

The primary hosts of this whitefly are plants belonging to the family Araceae, including popular ornamental species such as Anthurium, Aglaonema, Spathiphyllum, and Philodendron. The insects typically colonize the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves, where they are protected from direct sunlight and physical disturbances, making early detection challenging for growers.

The lifecycle of the pest includes the egg stage, three nymphal instars, and the adult stage (imago). Females lay their eggs on young, tender leaves to ensure the larvae have easy access to phloem sap. The developmental rate is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer conditions significantly shortening the time required to complete a full generation, leading to rapid population explosions.

The primary damage caused by Crenidorsum aroidephagus manifests as chlorotic spotting on leaves, which gradually turns yellow and necrotic. As the insects feed, they excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus interferes with photosynthesis, causing overall decline in plant vigor and severe aesthetic damage to the foliage.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this species involves:

  • Regular inspections of the undersides of leaves and the deployment of yellow sticky traps.
  • Strict quarantine measures for any new or infested plants.
  • Application of systemic insecticides or contact-based insecticidal soaps.
  • Maintaining optimal humidity and hygiene to reduce pest habitat.
  • Biological control using predators like predatory mites or entomopathogenic fungi.
