Systematic position. Ctenolepisma belongs to the order Zygentoma, family Lepismatidae. These are wingless, primitively built insects that possess a long, tapered body covered with shiny scales, giving them a distinctive silvery appearance, which is common for several members of this genus.

Affected crops and items. While not field pests that damage growing plants, Ctenolepisma species are significant pests in agricultural warehouses, seed storage facilities, and processing plants. They target stored organic materials, including grain, seeds, paper-based labels, and dried plant samples held in research collections.

Biology and lifecycle. The development follows a simple metamorphosis process. These insects are nocturnal, thrive in high-humidity environments, and are highly sensitive to light. A unique biological trait of Ctenolepisma is that adults continue to molt throughout their entire lifespan, which is a rare characteristic among insects.

Damage and economic impact. The pests cause damage by feeding on starches and proteins found in stored products. In a storage context, their presence can compromise the integrity of packaging, destroy germination tags, and contaminate produce with feces or shed scales. Significant infestations can negatively affect the marketability of the stored agricultural stock.

Control measures. Effective management focuses on habitat modification, such as reducing ambient humidity and removing clutter from storage areas. Sanitation is crucial to eliminate food sources. Chemical control using residual insecticides or specialized baits can be employed in heavy infestations, complemented by monitoring with glue traps to manage population growth.
