Four-lined silverfish

The four-lined silverfish (Ctenolepisma quadriseriata) is a member of the Zygentoma order, belonging to the Lepismatidae family. This wingless insect is characterized by its silver-scaled, elongated body and rapid, undulating movement. While often considered a household nuisance, it frequently infests greenhouses, nurseries, and agricultural storage facilities, where it can cause notable economic damage.

In an agricultural context, this pest primarily targets stored products rather than living crops in the field. However, it can damage young seedlings, germinating seeds rich in starch, herbarium specimens, and organic substrates. Its omnivorous nature makes it a generalist feeder that thrives on debris and stored grains found in agricultural environments.

The life cycle of the four-lined silverfish consists of the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Unlike many other insects, they continue to molt throughout their adult lives. They prefer warm and humid environments, often hiding in crevices or under stacks of materials, which allows them to build up large populations in secluded areas.

Damage is typically characterized by small, irregular scrapings on the surface of organic matter or the consumption of seed embryos. Due to their nocturnal behavior, infestations are often discovered only when damage has become extensive. Beyond direct feeding, they can contaminate products with their feces and scales, affecting the quality of agricultural commodities.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on habitat modification and sanitation. Key practices include:
