The firebrat (Thermobia domestica) is an insect belonging to the order Zygentoma and the family Lepismatidae. Unlike its close relative, the silverfish, the firebrat thrives in high-temperature environments, making it a common pest in bakeries, grain storage facilities, and heated industrial warehouses.

This insect is a significant storage pest, feeding on various carbohydrate-rich substances such as flour, grain dust, starch, and dried organic materials. Beyond food products, firebrats are known to cause damage to paper, book bindings, and fabrics, utilizing the starch or glue content as a nutritional source.

The biology of the firebrat is characterized by ametabolous development. They prefer temperatures between 30°C and 40°C. A single female can lay a substantial number of eggs during her lifetime, depositing them in cracks and crevices. The nymphs resemble miniature adults and undergo several molts before reaching maturity, a process that is highly dependent on environmental warmth.

The damage caused by Thermobia domestica is primarily due to their feeding habits, which ruin the aesthetic and commercial quality of stored goods. In addition to direct consumption, they contaminate products with their feces, scales, and exuviae. Their cryptic behavior, often avoiding light, allows populations to increase undetected until significant damage has already occurred.
