Description

The firebrat (lat. Thermobia domestica) is a synanthropic insect belonging to the order Zygentoma and the family Lepismatidae. Unlike common silverfish, firebrats thrive in significantly higher temperatures, making them a problematic pest in greenhouses, nurseries, and warm industrial storage facilities where they can establish large colonies.

This pest is a generalist feeder known for damaging a variety of plants in protected environments. Firebrats typically feed on succulent plant tissues, including young shoots, buds, and leaves. In high-density infestations, they can cause significant damage to seedlings and stored agricultural products, often stripping the epidermis of leaves and damaging growth points, which stunts plant development.

The biology of the firebrat is uniquely adapted to heat, with optimal development occurring at temperatures between 35°C and 40°C. The lifecycle includes egg, nymphal stages, and adult phases. A key feature of their development is that they continue to molt throughout their entire adult life, allowing for continuous growth and rapid recovery from minor physical trauma, which contributes to their high survival rate in human-made structures.

Damage symptoms usually appear as irregular holes or etched surfaces on foliage. Because these insects are nocturnal and highly elusive, infestations often go unnoticed until significant damage is already present. Their presence often coincides with poor sanitation in greenhouse environments, and large populations can lead to secondary infections in the wounded plant tissues, further compromising crop health.

Integrated pest management is essential for controlling firebrat populations. Effective strategies include reducing ambient temperatures and humidity levels within the growing facility to create a less hospitable environment. Sanitation remains the most critical preventative measure, involving the removal of debris and potential hiding spots. Control methods include:

  • deploying sticky monitoring traps;
  • using specialized insecticidal baits;
  • cleaning and disinfecting storage areas before introducing new crops.
