Culex restuans, commonly known as the white-dotted mosquito, belongs to the family Culicidae, order Diptera. While it is not a direct threat to crop foliage, it is recognized in agricultural entomology as a significant nuisance and health risk to farm animals. Its presence is often linked to poorly managed water systems within agricultural landscapes.

The biology of Culex restuans is defined by its preference for stagnant water containing organic matter. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in rafts on the water surface. Larvae are filter feeders that thrive in warm, nutrient-rich water, making irrigation ponds, buckets, and clogged drainage systems prime breeding grounds.

The economic impact of this species is primarily indirect but significant. By acting as a vector for various avian and mammalian viruses, including West Nile virus, it poses a recurring threat to the health of poultry and livestock. In addition, persistent bites cause physiological stress in cattle, leading to reduced feed intake, decreased weight gain, and lower milk production.

The damage potential is most critical during warm, humid months when population densities peak. Agricultural workers are also at risk of bites, which can affect labor efficiency in fields and farmyards. Identifying breeding sources within the farm perimeter is essential for effective population suppression and risk mitigation.
