While they do not directly feed on plant tissues, they are considered a significant nuisance pest in agricultural settings, as their aggressive behavior negatively impacts labor productivity and animal welfare in horticultural and nursery environments.

This species is widely distributed throughout boreal and temperate forest zones. The biology of the adult mosquito involves both sexes feeding on nectar for energy, but the females specifically require a blood meal from vertebrates to develop their eggs. Their tendency to swarm in damp, shaded areas often makes them a problem near irrigation zones and forest-adjacent fields.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is exclusively aquatic, typically occurring in stagnant water, woodland pools, or neglected drainage areas on farms. The speed of their development is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for rapid population explosions during warm, humid weather conditions.

The primary economic damage caused by this species is indirect. By interfering with agricultural activities such as pruning, weeding, and harvesting, the mosquitoes reduce the overall efficiency of labor. Furthermore, their presence can stress livestock, potentially decreasing milk or meat production, and they can occasionally act as vectors for minor pathogens in farm environments.

Effective management and control strategies focus on habitat disruption rather than direct crop treatment:
