Description
The box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is a devastating invasive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. Originally native to East Asia, it has rapidly spread across Europe and other regions, becoming the most significant threat to the health and aesthetics of Buxus species worldwide.
This moth primarily targets boxwood plants, which are widely used in landscape design for hedging and topiary. Due to the lack of specialized natural predators in invaded territories, the population of Cydalima perspectalis can reach explosive levels, leading to widespread plant mortality in both private gardens and historical landscapes.
The biological cycle is rapid, with the species producing multiple generations per year depending on environmental temperature. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Larvae overwinter within hibernating webs spun between boxwood leaves, emerging in early spring to begin feeding immediately on new foliage.
The damage caused by the larvae is severe and rapid. They start by skeletonizing the underside of leaves and progress to consuming entire leaves, young shoots, and even the bark of the host plant. A heavily infested bush is characterized by dense webbing, brown dry patches, and the presence of greenish-black larval excrement, eventually resulting in the total dieback of the plant.
Effective management strategies combine chemical, biological, and cultural practices. Regular monitoring for the presence of adults using pheromone traps is essential for timing interventions. Chemical control should be performed using systemic and contact insecticides approved for Lepidopteran pests. Biological control, including the use of Bacillus thuringiensis sprays, is highly recommended as it provides effective control while minimizing harm to beneficial insects.
