Description

Cydalima laticostalis is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae, order Lepidoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant pest, closely related to other harmful pyralid moths that pose a serious threat to various ornamental plants globally.

The primary hosts for this pest include plants of the Buxaceae family. The larvae are voracious feeders that target foliage and young stems. Severe infestations often lead to rapid defoliation, which causes significant physiological stress to the host plants, potentially resulting in their decline or complete death if left unmanaged.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding. As they grow, they spin silk webs, which they use to bind leaves together, creating protective shelters while they consume the plant tissue.

Damage symptoms are characterized by skeletonized leaves, where only the major veins remain, and the presence of frass (larval waste) trapped within the silk webbing. The visual impact on the host plant is sudden and severe, with large portions of the canopy turning brown or becoming completely denuded within a short timeframe.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including the manual removal of larvae, the use of pheromone monitoring traps, and the application of biological insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis or approved chemical pesticides, are essential for keeping the population below economic injury levels.
