Box tree moth

The box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is an invasive moth species belonging to the family Crambidae. Originally native to East Asia, it has become a severe threat to boxwood (Buxus) plants across Europe and other regions, causing significant economic and aesthetic damage to landscaping and private gardens.

The primary host plant is the common boxwood. Because the species lacks effective local predators, it spreads rapidly throughout dense shrubbery. If left unchecked, the larvae can consume the entirety of a plant's foliage, eventually killing the shrub by stripping the bark from the stems and branches.

The life cycle of the box tree moth is characterized by multiple generations per year in warmer climates. The larvae overwinter in small, silken cocoons spun between leaves. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed, initiating a rapid population surge that can devastate boxwood hedges in a very short amount of time.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinctive and severe. Early signs include skeletonized leaves and thin, web-like structures on the branches. As the larvae mature, they consume whole leaves, leaving only veins or bare stems. The presence of green or brown frass and heavy webbing is a clear indicator of a severe infestation.

Effective control strategies for the box tree moth involve:

• Frequent visual inspection of boxwood bushes starting early in the spring.
• Using pheromone traps to monitor adult moth activity and catch males.
• Mechanical removal of webs and larvae from smaller bushes.
• Applying targeted insecticides when young larvae are present to prevent structural damage.
• Utilizing biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are effective against larvae while minimizing environmental impact.
