Cyrtophora citricola is a spider species belonging to the Araneidae family. While often regarded as a beneficial predator in natural ecosystems, its habit of creating massive, non-sticky, dome-shaped webs across various woody plants can lead to significant issues in orchards and ornamental nurseries.

The biology of this species is unique because it abandons the typical orb-web structure in favor of a complex three-dimensional scaffold. The life cycle allows for colonial living, where multiple generations may inhabit the same web system. Females are significantly larger and exert influence on the environment by constantly extending their silk structures across branches.

The species primarily affects citrus trees, shrubs, and ornamental foliage. By utilizing the branches as anchor points, the spiders create large webs that can envelop entire sections of the plant. This persistent presence makes the infested plant a focal point for further colonization if left unchecked by agricultural workers.

The harm caused by these spiders is mostly mechanical and physical. The heavy silk accumulation restricts airflow, traps dust and organic debris, and shades the leaves. This obstruction interferes with photosynthesis and can lead to moisture retention within the canopy, potentially facilitating the onset of fungal infections or favoring other secondary pests.

Protection measures should prioritize mechanical removal of webs and egg sacs. In commercial or residential settings, the following steps are recommended:

  • Regular monitoring of the canopy during the growing season.
  • Manual pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce spider habitat.
  • Cleaning trunks and foliage to discourage web attachment.
