Description

Systematic position. The oleander hawk-moth (Latin Daphnis nerii) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. It is a large, migratory moth known for its distinctive green and white camouflaged forewings, which help it blend into the foliage during the day.

Host plants. As the name implies, the oleander (Nerium oleander) is its primary host. However, the larvae are polyphagous to some extent and can also feed on various other plants, including periwinkle (Vinca), jasmine (Jasminum), grapevines, and several other species within the Apocynaceae family.

Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. The adults are strong flyers, often migrating over long distances. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae grow rapidly through several instars, feeding voraciously on the foliage before descending to the soil to pupate inside a loose cocoon.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage. Young larvae feed on the epidermis, while older larvae consume the entire leaf, often leaving only the midribs. A heavy infestation can lead to complete defoliation of the host plant, significantly weakening its health and structural integrity.

Protection measures. To effectively manage populations of Daphnis nerii, consider the following strategies:

  • Manual removal of larvae in small gardens or on potted plants.
  • Regular monitoring of host plants for eggs and small larvae.
  • Application of microbial insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are effective against young larvae.
  • Use of broad-spectrum contact insecticides for severe infestations in commercial or large-scale plantings.
