Description
The oleander hawk-moth (Daphnis nerii) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. While the adult moth is a marvel of nature, its larvae are significant pests that can severely damage various ornamental plants, particularly in Mediterranean and tropical climates.
The primary host plants for this species include the oleander (Nerium oleander), periwinkle, grapes, and various species of jasmine. The larvae are voracious eaters, focusing their damage on the foliage, which can leave plants completely defoliated in a very short amount of time.
The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on the underside of host leaves. The caterpillars grow through several instars, feeding primarily at night. The pupal stage is often spent in the soil or among leaf litter, where the moth undergoes its transformation.
Damage caused by the larvae is characterized by ragged leaf edges and large holes in the foliage. Significant infestations can lead to the loss of photosynthetic area, resulting in weakened plant health, stunted growth, and a loss of aesthetic value for decorative shrubs and trees.
