Description
The Azalea sphinx (Darapsa choerilus) is a moth belonging to the family Sphingidae, order Lepidoptera. This species is native to North America and is recognized in agricultural and horticultural contexts as a foliage feeder that occasionally reaches densities high enough to cause noticeable plant damage.
The larvae of this moth primarily feed on plants from the Vitaceae and Caprifoliaceae families. Common host plants include grapevines (Vitis), viburnum (Viburnum), and hydrangeas (Hydrangea). By feeding on the leaves, the larvae utilize these plants as a primary energy source during their development stages.
The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal and crepuscular. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through five instars of growth before pupating in the soil, which serves as their overwintering site.
The economic damage is primarily caused by the larval stage, which consumes leaf tissue, leading to defoliation. Significant feeding can result in reduced photosynthetic capacity, which impacts the overall health and growth of the host plant. While usually not a primary threat to commercial crops, they can be highly detrimental to ornamental nurseries.
