Description

Darna diducta is a moth species belonging to the Limacodidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets oil palm plantations, causing substantial economic losses in various tropical regions.

The primary host for this pest is the oil palm, although it can occasionally affect other palm species. The larvae are the stage responsible for the damage, as they feed voraciously on the foliage of the host plants, which is essential for the tree's photosynthesis and development.

The life cycle of the moth consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae, often called nettle caterpillars, have a slug-like appearance. They typically inhabit the underside of palm fronds, progressing through several instars before pupating on the leaves or within the canopy debris.

Damage caused by Darna diducta involves the skeletonization of palm leaves. In severe infestations, the entire canopy can be stripped, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the palms. This leads to a marked decrease in fresh fruit bunch yield and can negatively impact oil quality.
