Description

Deanolis sublimbalis, commonly referred to as the mango fruit borer, is a destructive moth species within the family Crambidae (order Lepidoptera). This pest is a major limiting factor in mango production across tropical regions, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of the Pacific.

The pest primarily targets mango fruits, although it can be found on related botanical species within the region. It thrives in high-humidity environments, making dense and poorly managed orchards particularly susceptible to infestation during the fruit development stage.

The biological development follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the fruit surface. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the fruit, consuming the interior pulp. This larval stage is the most damaging phase of its lifecycle, often leading to rapid fruit deterioration from within.

Damage symptoms are easily recognizable by the presence of entry holes, typically found near the fruit stalk, often accompanied by frass (larval excrement). These openings serve as entry points for various secondary rot-causing pathogens, resulting in the total decay of the fruit. This infestation leads to severe crop loss, often ruining up to 90% of the yield if left unmanaged.

  • Implementing strict orchard sanitation by collecting and destroying infested fallen fruits.
  • Deploying pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and disrupt mating cycles.
