Dendroleon

Dendroleon is a genus of insects belonging to the family Myrmeleontidae (antlions) within the order Neuroptera. Unlike their relatives who build pitfall traps in sand, Dendroleon larvae are specialized predators that inhabit decaying wood, tree hollows, and deep bark crevices, where they hunt smaller insects.

These insects are primarily associated with forest ecosystems and old orchards. While they are not considered primary agricultural pests in most cases, their presence often signals an existing health decline in trees. Their appearance in a garden setting typically correlates with rot or structural damage that provides a habitat for their predatory larvae.

The lifecycle of Dendroleon consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae possess strong sickle-shaped mandibles designed for piercing and extracting fluids from their prey. Development from larva to adult stage can span multiple seasons, as the larvae require significant time to mature before spinning a dense silk cocoon for pupation.

The damage caused by Dendroleon is mostly indirect but significant for aged or weakened trees. Larvae enlarge existing cavities in decaying wood, which promotes the penetration of moisture and pathogens. This expansion can weaken the structural integrity of the tree, potentially accelerating the progression of rot and predisposing the plant to secondary infections.
