Description
The antlion (Euroleon nostras) belongs to the order Neuroptera and the family Myrmeleontidae. Despite often being associated with negative labels in agricultural contexts, the antlion is actually a beneficial insect that acts as a natural predator within the soil ecosystem.
Adult antlions resemble damselflies but possess distinctively clubbed antennae. They are primarily nocturnal and do not feed on plant tissues, meaning they pose no threat to agricultural crops or ornamental garden plants in any stage of their development.
The lifecycle of the Euroleon involves complete metamorphosis. The larva is a highly specialized predator that thrives in loose, sandy soil. It is famous for its unique hunting behavior, which allows it to thrive in nutrient-poor environments by trapping wandering terrestrial invertebrates.
The larvae construct conical pits in the sand to trap prey. They remain buried at the bottom of these pits, waiting for an ant or other small arthropod to tumble inside.
