Description

The Siberian silk moth (Dendrolimus sibiricus) is a significant lepidopteran pest belonging to the Lasiocampidae family. It is recognized as one of the most destructive defoliators of coniferous forests in northern Asia, often causing catastrophic damage to vast areas of natural and managed timberlands.

The moth primarily targets various coniferous species, including larch, fir, spruce, and several pine species, most notably the Siberian pine (cedar). In outbreak years, the larvae consume the needles with such intensity that they leave trees completely defoliated, which severely stresses the forest ecosystems and often results in mass mortality.

The life cycle of this insect is notably variable, typically ranging from two to three years depending on the environmental conditions. After mating, females deposit eggs in clusters on needles or branches. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo multiple molts, feeding voraciously throughout the growing season and overwintering in the soil litter or within bark crevices.

The impact of the Siberian silk moth is primarily due to defoliation, which causes physiological collapse of the host trees. Deprived of their needles, trees cannot produce sufficient energy, making them susceptible to opportunistic secondary pests, such as wood-boring beetles, which ultimately kill the weakened trees.
