Description

The Siberian silk moth (Dendrolimus sibiricus) is a devastating defoliator belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant threats to coniferous forests across the northern regions of Eurasia, capable of causing large-scale mortality of trees over vast territories.

The pest primarily targets coniferous tree species, including Siberian larch, spruce, fir, and various species of pine. During outbreaks, the larvae can completely defoliate vast stands of timber within a single season, leading to severe physiological stress and subsequent colonization by secondary pests such as bark beetles and wood-boring insects.

The life cycle of the Siberian silk moth is complex and typically lasts from one to three years, depending on the climatic conditions. The insect goes through four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, characterized by voracious feeding on needles, which are consumed entirely, leaving only small remains on the twigs.

The damage caused by these insects is not limited to immediate defoliation. Repeated loss of needles over consecutive years depletes the tree's energy reserves. This makes the host tree susceptible to secondary diseases and insect infestations, often resulting in widespread tree mortality that alters the forest structure and disrupts local ecological balance.

Effective management strategies rely heavily on early detection and monitoring. Surveillance systems using pheromone traps and aerial inspections are critical for identifying potential outbreaks. Control measures include the application of biological insecticides, such as preparations of Bacillus thuringiensis, and, in severe cases, the selective use of contact chemical insecticides during the early larval instars.
