These beetles are specialized aquatic insects often found in lotic habitats such as running streams, springs, and rocky brooks, which distinguishes them from many other members of the family that prefer stagnant water.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Deronectes involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Both adults and larvae are active predators. Breeding occurs in aquatic environments where females deposit eggs on submerged surfaces. The larvae possess specialized mandibles, enabling them to hunt various small invertebrates effectively within their habitat.

Nature of damage. The damage caused is generally indirect. In sensitive environments like aquaculture ponds or nursery irrigation systems, larvae can consume beneficial organisms. Their presence in high numbers serves as an indicator of an ecological imbalance in the water source, which might lead to cascading issues for the health of the primary agricultural crops relying on that water.

Control measures. Integrated pest management for Deronectes focuses on environmental regulation rather than chemical eradication. Recommended strategies include:
