Desmia

Desmia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Crambidae. These insects are known in viticulture primarily due to the species Desmia funeralis, commonly referred to as the grape leaffolder. These moths are characterized by their dark coloration with distinct white spots on their wings, which is a key trait for field identification by agronomists.

The primary host plants for Desmia are members of the Vitaceae family, particularly grapevines (Vitis vinifera). While they are specialized feeders, their impact on commercial vineyards can be significant. The larvae feed on the leaves, creating nests that reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the vine during critical growth stages.

The biology of Desmia involves a complete life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to skeletonize the leaf tissue and then construct tubular shelters by folding and webbing the leaves together with silk. This protective structure shields them from predators and environmental stress.

Damage caused by Desmia is easily identified by the presence of tightly rolled or folded leaves on the vine. Inside these structures, one can find the larvae or their frass. Severe infestations can lead to widespread defoliation, which hampers the vine's ability to produce sugars, negatively affecting fruit quality and the wood maturation process needed for the following season.

Management strategies for Desmia focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Mechanical control, such as manual removal of rolled leaves, is effective in small-scale vineyards. For commercial operations, monitoring for flight activity and larval emergence is essential for timely application of biorational or synthetic insecticides, ensuring minimal impact on beneficial biodiversity.
