Description
Dialeurodes is a genus of insects belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, commonly known as whiteflies. These pests are notorious in horticultural and agricultural sectors due to their ability to feed on the sap of various host plants, causing significant economic damage in both indoor and outdoor environments.
The genus includes several species, with Dialeurodes citri (citrus whitefly) being the most economically important. These pests primarily target citrus trees, but they also infest a wide range of ornamental shrubs and garden plants. Their presence is often detected by the appearance of discolored foliage and the development of sooty mold.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult phase. After hatching, the first-instar larvae, or crawlers, actively seek a suitable feeding site on the underside of a leaf. Once settled, they become sedentary, secrete a protective cover, and feed extensively on plant juices throughout their development.
Damage is twofold: direct and indirect. Direct damage occurs when larvae extract essential nutrients, causing yellowing, wilting, and reduced plant vigor. Indirect damage occurs when whiteflies excrete honeydew, which fosters the growth of black sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight, severely hindering photosynthesis and reducing the marketability of the plants.
Managing Dialeurodes requires an integrated approach. Effective strategies include:
- monitoring using yellow sticky traps;
- pruning and destroying heavily infested leaves;
- applying systemic insecticides during the crawler stage;
- introducing biological control agents like parasitic wasps (e.g., Encarsia spp.).
