Citrus whitefly

Dialeurodes cinnamomicola is a harmful insect species classified within the family Aleyrodidae (whiteflies) of the order Hemiptera. This pest is recognized as a significant threat to various agricultural crops, particularly in subtropical and tropical environments where its environmental requirements are perfectly met.

The primary host plants for this species include members of the genus Citrus and various species within the Cinnamomum genus. The insect predominantly resides on the underside of leaves, which provides a protected microclimate for feeding and oviposition, often going unnoticed until the infestation is well-established.

The biological cycle of this whitefly involves distinct developmental stages: egg, several larval instars (nymphs), and the winged adult. The nymphs are sessile, meaning they remain fixed in one location once they begin feeding, which allows them to efficiently extract sap from the host plant's vascular system throughout their growth phase.

Damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct and indirect. Direct damage occurs through the withdrawal of plant nutrients, leading to stunted growth and yellowing of foliage. Indirect damage is caused by the secretion of honeydew, which facilitates the growth of sooty mold, blocking sunlight from the leaf surface and severely disrupting photosynthesis.

Management strategies for this pest require an integrated approach. Effective measures include:

• Maintaining proper crown ventilation through regular pruning.
• Application of horticultural oils or systemic insecticides during the nymph stage.
