Description
The Elba whitefly (Dialeurodes elbaensis) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized as a significant economic threat to citrus orchards, where it thrives in warm, humid conditions by feeding on the sap of host plants.
The primary host range of this pest is limited mainly to citrus species. The insects typically colonize the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves, where they establish colonies. Their presence is often detected by the observation of chlorotic spots or the characteristic black mold that develops on the leaves following heavy infestations.
The biological cycle of Dialeurodes elbaensis follows a metamorphosis process consisting of egg, larval stages (nymphs), and adult stages. The larvae are sedentary and possess a specialized proboscis, which they insert into the leaf tissue to extract plant sap, severely taxing the plant's metabolic resources.
Damage to the plant is twofold: direct loss of nutrients due to sap sucking and indirect damage through the excretion of honeydew. This sugary substance serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, which coat the foliage, effectively blocking sunlight and significantly inhibiting the process of photosynthesis.
