Loranth whitefly

Systematic position: Dialeurodes loranthi belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aleyrodidae. This species is a specialized sap-sucking pest frequently found on plants of the Loranthaceae family and various other woody species in tropical and subtropical regions.

Affected crops: The primary hosts of this pest are plants within the Loranthaceae family. However, under conditions of intensive horticulture and plant introduction, it can spread to fruit and ornamental crops, disrupting their physiological processes. It poses a particular threat to plants with dense foliage, which provide an ideal microclimate for population growth.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle consists of the egg stage, several larval (nymph) instars, and the adult stage. Adults are active flyers, laying eggs on the undersides of leaves. The first-instar larvae are mobile, but subsequent stages become sessile, feeding on plant sap through their piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Damage and harmfulness: Feeding by both larvae and adults weakens the plant significantly. During their life cycle, the pests secrete honeydew—a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This condition hinders photosynthesis, leads to leaf deformation and premature senescence, and ultimately reduces the overall productivity of the crop.

Protection measures: Controlling the population density requires a combination of agrotechnical and chemical strategies:

• Monitoring using yellow sticky traps for the early detection of adults.
• Sanitary pruning and removal of heavily infested plant material.
• Utilization of biological control agents such as predatory mites or entomopathogenic fungi.
• Application of systemic insecticides when the economic threshold of damage is reached.
